CAPITAL PROJECTS

Schot Engineers can develop the preliminary scope, schedule and budget for your capital engineering projects. We will partner with the stakeholders to define all project requirements and then identify the equipment, systems and facilities that will meet the defined project objectives. During this phase we will also identify any subject matter experts, process authorities and consultants that will need to be part of the team. Our engineers can partner with A&E firms starting in this phase of the project to provide a complete project solution.

During Preliminary Engineering Schot Engineers will further develop the details necessary to bring the project into sharp focus. We will confirm all requirements defined in the Capital Planning Phase and develop critical front-end documents. These documents include process flow diagrams, mass balance, preliminary P&IDs, plant layout, equipment list, process and packaging design criteria, preliminary functional descriptions, and utility requirements. These documents form the framework that will be used to communicate with the stakeholders.

Preliminary success criteria for the purchased equipment and final system will be determined at this phase. This includes both FAT and SAT metrics. Without understanding the success criteria throughout the entire project, finished systems are often less effective at achieving your final goals.

A complete project execution plan will be developed by the Schot Project Manager as well as the Level 1 schedule and final project budget.

PROCESS & MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Using the Preliminary Phase technical documents as the overall plan, Schot Engineers will create the detailed process engineering and installation documents. These will include final P&IDs, equipment specifications, instrument specifications, detailed equipment layouts, piping specifications, piping drawings, mechanical and piping installation scopes of work and drawing packages. Our team will develop final factory and site acceptance test protocols for equipment vendors and will manage all vendor activities to ensure the equipment performs as expected and required.

ELECTRICAL, INSTRMENTATION & CONTROLS ENGINEERING

Enhancing the details of preliminary engineering documents, Schot Engineers will create the detailed electrical, installation, and controls engineering documents (electrical 1-lines, control panel specifications, instrument specifications, controls narratives, logic flow diagrams, construction and installation contractor scopes of work, etc.)

The work from the previous phases assembles into a cohesive and thorough installation plan. Our attention to detail in the previous phases prevents this phase from ballooning into a larger cost and longer time frame than expected. Schot Engineers will provide complete and seamless management of the construction phase. We will evaluate bids and help select installation contractors as well as be part of the site team during construction. Engineers will help the installation contractors plan, execute their work, and will coordinate all vendor technical interaction.

Schot will continuously monitor and control the project budget, scope, quality, and schedule during this phase.

Schot Engineers will plan, lead, and manage the commissioning and validation of the systems and equipment ensuring conformance with all requirements and success criteria. Our team will manage on-site vendor technicians, process authorities and support your operations and maintenance teams at this critical project phase. Schot assists with development of operational checks, performance verification, daily operations checklists, operator training documents, etc.

Scale-Up

DISCOVERY

Your team creates initial product samples in your lab or test kitchen and determines that at least one product should proceed to the next phase of development.

SCOPING

A more complex lab system is assembled to produce improved quality samples while testing ranges of factors (varying feeds, temperatures, times, etc.) Schot Engineers can assist with the system’s design, configuration, instrumentation, data logging, and automation. The intent of this phase is to identify key unit operations, process parameter ranges, and quality metrics. We can also provide estimates for the pilot and full manufacturing systems as inputs to your business case to determine if the product should progress to the Development phase.

DEVELOPMENT

A pilot system is created that incorporates learnings from the lab system and can be easily scaled to a full manufacturing system. Schot Engineers can assist with all technical aspects of the pilot system including engineering design, drawings, instrumentation, automation, equipment specifications, installation oversight, commission, training, and troubleshooting. This can also include creating trade secret equipment to set you apart from your competition. The intent of this phase is to prove the product is manufacturable, verify the unit operation designs, confirm the process parameter limits, finalize the quality metrics, and produce repeatable samples. Based on the learns from the pilot system, we can revise the full scale manufacturing system estimates to include in your business case evaluation for product launch.

FULL MANUFACTURING/ PRODUCT LAUNCH

Schot Engineers can lead all technical aspects of the full manufacturing system capital project. This could be retrofitting an existing production system, installing a new system in an existing facility, or installing a new greenfield facility.
